rting the kids even more. Then he jumped across it and left the kids to whatever adults were passing by and jumped back into the building.

He already had the exact count of children, which were 18 in total, and if there were no surprises, there were only 4 employees: the boss and 3 caregivers.

After cleaning the downstairs he found 8 more children and saved them. By this time, his shirt was already crumbling into dirt and holes, his pants were still tight, and his sneakers were already showing signs of melting. The soles of the sneakers squeaked with every step and that caused pain, but Mike was worried about something else now.

Going up to the first and last floors, Mike heard a noise that calmed him but didn lessen his urgency in the least. Fire sirens were close!

After another scream, Mike entered a room and found a caregiver who was holding a child tightly and trying to calm him down. When she heard the door open and looked at the guy, her eyes filled with tears of relief.

”Mike! Thank God! ”

With a nod, Mike held her like a princess and walked through the fire in the hallways. At times he had to cross hard to avoid getting burned, resigning himself to hitting his back against the wall so he could stop the acceleration. Finding a relatively safe area, he left the caregiver there.

”The other four are gone! 2 to school with one caregiver while the others went to the doctor with the boss! ” The caregiver yelled as Mike set her down.

Nodding again, he ran and went back searching. His expression was getting worse and worse, as the roof had already started to make cracking and falling sounds, while the ground started to go fluffy. It was just a small town, and an orphanage that didn have much money.

Running as best he could, his muscles already screaming to stop as more could harm them, Arthur finally heard a cry for help. This one was softer and gentler, but you could see the apparent panic.

As he was opening the door, his shoulders bumped into it due to inertia. The door was locked and it was a wooden door with some hot iron plates. The person inside noticed that someone was knocking, but could do nothing but scream more.

Stepping back, Mike started kicking at the door, mostly at the lock. He was pounding hard and more than his bones could handle. When one started to hurt too much, he kicked with the other foot.

After much struggle, the door finally opened to reveal a young, delicate caregiver, but smeared with ash and lightly coughing. In front of her was a log of wood that had fallen from the ceiling, on fire.

Ignoring everything, Mike jumped up the log and grabbed the last caregivers hand. His gaze now revealed more than just panic, but a bit of hidden tenderness.

The caretaker didn seem to notice this as she took his hand and hugged him tightly. There seemed to be more to this embrace than just the joy of hope.

Carefully helping her over the log, Mike finally looked into her eyes and had made up his mind about something. He wouldn let another day go by without showing her how he felt.

When her figure ran to the door safely and waited for him to flee with her, her eyes now emitted only sheer terror.

”No! ”

Just as Mike was finally going to pass the flaming log, another fell on top of him, the force of the impact enough to break the soft ground and drag him along.
